"SLOW" ARCHITECTURE
A unique architectural statement in the Berkeley Hills
Designed and Built by Mark Hajjar in 1975

2633 Marin Avenue, Berkeley
Offered at: $749,000 - Sold

During the 1960s and 1970s, a new generation of builders, influenced by the social unrest of the times, rejected modern architectural values and embraced natural materials and earlier styles of construction. 2633 Marin is an example, rare in Berkeley, of this style of organic architecture which was more widespread in Marin County and Big Sur.

The house is perched on rough hewn tree trunks from near Cazadero. It makes generous use of recycled materials including salvaged wood and castoffs from both Victorian houses and a WWII era factory — a green approach that was ahead of its time. Most surfaces are wood and, because the detailing was done by hand, the home feels warm and personal.
