With unparalleled views of the San Francisco Bay and skyline, stately residences and impeccably manicured gardens, the Berkeley’s Claremont district is a wonderful place to live!  Nestled in beautifully wooded hills just 12 miles from San Francisco, this historic area is dotted with pretty parks, elegant streets, hidden stairways and winding walking pathways.  Now a rare opportunity beckons to own a spacious Prairie School home in this distinguished neighborhood: 155 Alvarado Road.

The celebrated homes and mansions of Claremont represent an amazing a range of architectural styles.  English cottages, Prairie homes, and shingled cottages are side-by-side custom-designed residences in contemporary styles, not to mention magnificent examples of Italian and Spanish period revival.  Make no mistake, these are grand homes and, on average, some of the largest homes you will find in Berkeley.  Yes, every turn of the picturesque roads reveal an area with pedigree.

What really put this area on the map was the 1915 opening of the world-renowned Claremont Hotel, created as a retreat for wealthy San Franciscans to escape from the fog to the sunny side of the Bay.  Today the Claremont Resort & Spa also houses a private club complete with the very best is luxury health club amenities.

Right next to the Claremont Resort is the Berkeley Tennis Club—a true institution.  If nature calls you, three blocks down you will find the trailhead leading into the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve—nearly 300 acres of open space.  Wow!  Such easy access to nature while still living in the city: that is why we live here!

After your swim, tennis, hike, or yoga, head across the street to Domingo Street’s charming shopping and dining.  First put your name on the list for a scrumptious brunch at Rick & Ann’s—the beet hash is worth the wait!  No worries, as you can grab coffee at Peet’s Coffee & Tea and look in Ellington & French to peruse the most divine décor with which to place in your new home.  Find the cutest baby gift at Red Wagon and mail it at the Mail Boxes Plus next door.

A little farther along Claremont Avenue is Star Grocery, a true relic from a different era, but of course now the produce is from the local farms and the bread from Acme.  And just a few blocks north is Berkeley’s Elmwood and to the South is Oakland’s Rockridge—what could be better?

How about San Francisco in 17 minutes?  Indeed, few neighborhoods are as ideally located for commuting.  The express Transbay E bus is practically at your doorstep—arrive in San Francisco in comfort.  Rockridge BART is about a mile away.  By car, major highways 13 and 24 give access to San Francisco, Walnut Creek, and thus the entire Bay Area!

Berkeley’s Claremont District—for those seeking the very best in life!
